Here is our interview with Tommy and Jammo:
Can you pick out any favorites from your work that you're particularly proud of?
'Masterplan' was a really special release for us and definitely defined our sound in that period. It got a lot of support in the clubs as well as being playlisted on BBC 1xtra - it helped us spread our music by touring over the UK and rest of the world.
What's the best place for those new to your work to become familiar with what you do?
We would suggest checking out our Spotify or Apple music pages for the latest releases as well as our Soundcloud which has 2 years of mixes from our residency on Rinse FM. To keep up to date with our tour schedule and new releases, follow us on Instagram or Twitter.
How would you define your main role on most of the projects you work on? Do you mostly work on just your own material, or do you work with other artists as well?
We have been working as a duo for over 10 years now; before we met we both had our own solo material but we have focused on My Nu Leng since then. We write our own material as well as collaborations and remixes.
Can you briefly describe a moment of frustration from your past work, and what you may have done to overcome the obstacles? Would you approach it differently now?
We have had a number of colabs and remixes that have remained unheard and unreleased. In the past it has been difficult to understand rejections and negative feedback but time has taught us to remain positive and always stick to our sound and ideas.
Is there any gear you find yourself turning to most when working on a project?
Recently the Big Sky and TimeLine are getting used a lot - FX pedals from Strymon used alongside our Prophet Rev 2 creating some really epic and cinematic soundscapes and pads.
Do you play any instruments? How did you get started in music?
I (Jammo) play guitar and used to be in a band before my love for electronic music started. We both were massively influenced by our early visits to clubs and raves. It ignited a passion for DJing and we started producing music.
Do you have any words of wisdom for people who might aspire to get where you are in their own careers?
Always enjoy the process of making music and never lose sight of why you started producing - Use your influences and inspirations and turn them into something fresh and original - Something that defines you and your producing style.
How long have you been working with headphones, and what inspired you to start including them in your workflow?
We have been writing in headphones our whole producing lives. We travel a lot so having a quality pair of headphones to produce is essential. Getting back to the studio and having our projects sounding at a very high standard takes huge pressure off us.
Our Audeze LCD-4z’s have become a critical part of our creative process. It’s like having an on-the-road studio. The 4z’s give life to our mixes and make it really easy to pin point specific areas in the music so we can get the best out of our tracks!
